Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker released a 75-page plan Wednesday outlining an aggressive legislative agenda for the incoming Democratic Congress, positioning himself ahead of a potential 2028 presidential run.
Swift Action Urged
Pritzker called for legislation to be introduced on Day One, citing the speed of Trump's early executive actions in 2025 as a model. He emphasized the need to demonstrate responsiveness to voters' demand for change.
Key Policy Proposals
The plan includes raising the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour, restoring SNAP and Medicaid cuts, ending mass deportation policies, and passing the Tariff Relief for Consumer Act. It also recommends giving states more authority over betting markets, restoring Temporary Protected Status, and allowing year-round E15 gasoline sales.
Oversight and Legislation Balance
Pritzker said congressional committees should handle investigations of the executive branch while the broader Congress focuses on reversing damage to working families. He argued that even if Trump vetoes measures, Democrats must pass them to show the country's direction.
Political Context
Fresh off a third gubernatorial term victory, Pritzker spent millions on midterm battleground races and recently donated $1 million to a Texas Democratic candidate. The road map, titled "Fighting for Illinois: The Day One Agenda," contains federal recommendations applicable nationwide.
