British celebrity hairstylist John Frieda, founder of the global Frizz Ease haircare brand, died Tuesday at age 75, according to a family statement posted on his Instagram account. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family; the cause of death was not disclosed.

Career and brand legacy

Born in London in 1951, Frieda began his career in the city's hairstyling scene, working on Vogue fashion shoots and styling high-profile clients including Princess Diana, Madonna, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, The Beatles, Sarah Jessica Parker and Scarlett Johansson. He opened his first salon in London more than 30 years ago, later expanding to Los Angeles and New York City. In the 1990s he launched Frizz Ease, a serum designed to tame frizzy hair that grew into a full product line sold worldwide in drugstores and salons.

Personal life

Frieda married Scottish singer and actor Lulu in 1976; the couple had one son before divorcing. In the early 2000s he began a relationship with Avery Agnelli, widow of Fiat heir Giovanni Agnelli, and they married in 2019. With Agnelli he shared two children and a stepdaughter, Asia Agnelli Lagrange, who paid tribute to him online following his death.
