Texas Democrat James Talarico has been projected the winner in the state's U.S. Senate race, defeating Republican incumbent Ken Paxton. With 96% of votes reported, Talarico captured 55% of the vote, totaling 5,388,840 votes, while Paxton received 43%, or 4,184,417 votes.
Former Teacher Flips Seat
Talarico, a former teacher and seminarian, flipped the Senate seat in what he described as a mandate for change that transcends party lines. Speaking on "Good Morning America" Wednesday, hours after the projection, the senator-elect said Texans from all corners of the state demanded change and that change is now on the way.
Midterm Election Context
The victory comes amid broader Democratic gains in the 2026 midterm elections, with the party projected to gain control of the Senate. Talarico's win in Texas, traditionally a Republican stronghold, marks a significant shift in the state's political landscape.
