Irish reality TV star Maura Higgins has shared the difficult reality behind her participation in the US version of Dancing with the Stars, revealing she fell seriously ill during a recent week of the competition.
Illness and low scores
Higgins, 35, posted on Instagram that she was “really unwell, running on very little energy” while learning two dances, and shared photos of herself napping backstage and receiving an IV drip. Despite the setback, she and professional partner Mark Ballas performed a jive on Disney on Broadway Night, tying for the lowest score of the evening. They survived elimination, which sent home actor Julia Stiles and her partner Ezra Sosa.
Personal reflection and support
In her post, Higgins said she joined the show to challenge herself despite not being a dancer, performer, or athlete. She thanked Ballas for his patience and encouragement, and expressed gratitude to fans for their support. Ballas replied with praise for her effort, while Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas, his mother, called her a “beginner that has blossomed into a beautiful dancer.” Fellow Love Island alum Molly-Mae Hague also offered encouragement.
Competition context
Higgins and Ballas remain among seven couples left in season 35. Other celebrities still competing include actress Jenna Dewan, Glee actor Harry Shum Jr, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s Tatyana Ali. Higgins rose to fame on Love Island in 2019 and has since appeared on Dancing On Ice, Cooking With the Stars, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, The Traitors US, and now Dancing With The Stars.
