A United States Marine died Tuesday during a training incident at Camp Schwab in Okinawa, Japan, the 3rd Marine Division announced Wednesday.
The Marine's identity is being withheld until 24 hours after family notification. The circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation.
Camp Schwab hosts a significant U.S. military presence in Japan's southernmost prefecture. Okinawa is home to nearly 80,000 U.S. personnel, including about 30,000 active-duty troops across all service branches.
The incident follows separate allegations last month involving a U.S. Marine accused of murdering a woman in Okinawa. Secretary of State Marco Rubio pledged cooperation with Japanese authorities investigating that case, which sparked protests and led to a military curfew.
Lt. Gen. Benjamin Watson, commander of the III Marine Expeditionary Force, previously emphasized that service in Japan "comes with responsibility." The 3rd Marine Division expressed condolences to the Marine's family and loved ones.
