The UK government's "Be Ready" campaign, launched last week, urges households to stock a three-day supply of food, water, cash, and essentials like wind-up radios and power banks. The advice has sparked a wave of social media posts showcasing emergency stashes, turning preparedness into a new form of humblebragging on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

Posh Preppers Elevate Emergency Kits

A subset of users dubbed "posh preppers" are interpreting the guidelines with a luxury twist. Their 72-hour kits feature Perello olives, fancy crisp breads, straight-to-wok noodles, and premium jarred beans such as Bold Beans, alongside kimchi and pickles for gut health. Even Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner admitted her kit would include her favourite wine and mascara.

She distinguishes between calm, rational preparation and obsessive planning that dominates thoughts and disrupts sleep.

Finding Balance in Preparedness

Sturmer advises treating preparation as a practical, organized activity: make a list, complete it, then move on. She also recommends countering prepping-related anxiety with present-moment activities that bring joy, reducing the sense of living in fear of the future.
