Democrats celebrated a sweeping victory in the U.S. midterm elections, reclaiming control of both chambers of Congress in what analysts described as a "blue tsunami" and a stark rebuke of President Donald Trump's second term. With votes still being counted, party attention has already shifted to the 2028 presidential primary, where several prominent figures are emerging as potential nominees.
Jon Ossoff
Senator Jon Ossoff, 39, won re-election in Georgia with over 59% of the vote and has seen his prediction-market odds surge to 24% for the Democratic nomination. Known for his sharp criticism of Trump, Ossoff has drawn comparisons to Barack Obama for his oratory and appeal across progressive and centrist wings. Polymarket now lists him as the frontrunner for the presidency with an 18% chance.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 37, comfortably won re-election in New York's 14th district with 78% of the vote. Her nomination odds rose to 18% on Polymarket after a high-profile interview in which she declined to rule out a presidential run. Ocasio-Cortez remains a leading progressive voice in the party.
Gavin Newsom
California Governor Gavin Newsom, 59, was the early frontrunner for the nomination, peaking at 40% likelihood late last year. His odds have since declined steadily. Newsom, termed out after two terms, has said his children will influence his decision on a 2028 run. His combative media style and social media presence initially boosted his profile.
Pete Buttigieg
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has maintained a steady presence in prediction markets since Trump's return to office. The 2020 primary candidate currently holds a 4% chance on Polymarket, down from 13% a year ago. Buttigieg has not launched a campaign but has left the door open for a potential run.
Kamala Harris
Vice President Kamala Harris, the 2024 Democratic nominee, may seek another presidential bid. After a 107-day campaign that failed to detach from the Biden administration's legacy, Harris has not confirmed a run but has not ruled it out. Polymarket gives her a 3% chance, though some experts believe she is preparing for another attempt.
