Uganda Cracks Down on Online Critics, Activists Defy Pressure

By Fatma Younis

Uganda is intensifying a crackdown on online critics, according to a new report highlighting government pressure on digital dissent. The campaign has prompted defiance from activists, with one declaring, "I will not delete my posts," despite threats of legal action and account suspensions.

Authorities have targeted journalists, opposition supporters, and ordinary citizens who criticize government policies on social media platforms. The crackdown includes arrests, forced deletions of content, and new regulations that expand state control over online speech.

Human rights groups warn the measures violate constitutional guarantees of free expression and aim to silence dissent ahead of upcoming political deadlines. The government maintains the actions are necessary to combat misinformation and maintain national security.
