Anthony Ippolito secured the lead role in "I Play Rocky," a film about Sylvester Stallone's struggle to write and star in the original "Rocky," after sending an unsolicited audition tape to director Peter Farrelly.

Unsolicited Audition Tape Wins Role

The 27-year-old actor took the initiative when he learned Farrelly was developing the project, creating his own audition material and sending it without an invitation. Farrelly said the tape convinced him immediately, canceling plans for a worldwide search.

Farrelly Praises Ippolito's Transformation

Farrelly praised Ippolito's ability to avoid caricature, noting he captured the man behind the iconic screen persona. The director had previously admired Ippolito's portrayal of a young Al Pacino in the miniseries "The Offer," though he did not initially realize it was the same actor.

Portraying Stallone's Early Struggles

Ippolito approached the role by exploring Stallone's difficult childhood, limited parental support, and sense of isolation, aiming to strip away the celebrity image. He also highlighted Stallone's determination, such as turning down $300,000 for the "Rocky" screenplay to retain the starring role.

Stallone's Reaction to the Film

Co-star AnnaSophia Robb, who plays Stallone's first wife Sasha, described Ippolito's transformation as subtle and natural after a year and a half of preparation. Stallone himself, who was not involved in the production beyond a conversation with Farrelly, called the film "fantastic" and praised Ippolito's performance.
