A 36-year-old British mother, Leanne Gregory, has died in the Bahamas after attempting to rescue her two sons from powerful ocean currents while snorkeling.
Tragedy during family expedition
The incident occurred on a Tuesday morning off the southern end of Bimini. While the family was on an expedition, strong currents swept the two boys out to sea. Mrs. Gregory attempted to save them, and although the children were successfully pulled from the water, she became unresponsive. She was transported to the North Bimini Ferry Dock and later pronounced dead at a local hospital despite medical efforts to save her.
Husband pays tribute to 'hero' wife
Leanne Gregory's husband, Nathan Gregory, described his wife as the foundation of their family and a hero. The family had traveled to the Caribbean islands to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary ahead of schedule in December. Nathan Gregory noted that the couple had been together for 22 years, having been childhood sweethearts. He expressed profound gratitude that his sons were rescued safely, even as he mourned the loss of his wife.
Rescue efforts hampered by rough conditions
Linty Stuart, captain of the L&A Water Taxi, reported that his crew spotted frantic waving in the distance and rushed to assist. He described the rescue as extremely difficult due to heavy waves reaching up to 8 feet, which nearly overturned the vessel. The local police confirmed that officers responded to reports of an unresponsive woman at the ferry dock, where CPR had been administered following her rescue from the water.
