Cher has issued a blunt response to Michael Douglas after the actor suggested she should not have won the Best Actress Oscar for "Moonstruck" in 1988. Douglas made the remarks during an appearance on "The Graham Norton Show" last Friday, where he argued that Glenn Close deserved the award for her performance in "Fatal Attraction."
Douglas Questions Cher's Oscar Win
While promoting his new memoir "One Helluva Ride," Douglas told Norton that Close's loss was a shock, noting it was her fourth nomination. "Cher won that year," Douglas said, adding, "I mean, Glenn gave one of the greatest performances of all time, and… you know." Norton joked, "But Cher put some grey in her hair, so there you go." Cher's win for the romantic drama came over nominees Holly Hunter, Meryl Streep, and Sally Kirkland. Douglas himself won Best Actor that year for "Wall Street."
Cher's Representative Fires Back
A representative for Cher told Entertainment Weekly: "Cher adores Michael Douglas." The concise statement drew mixed reactions online, with some defending Cher's "Moonstruck" win as one of the best in Oscar history, while others agreed with Douglas's assessment. Cher, known for hits like "Believe" and "If I Could Turn Back Time," released the first part of her memoir in 2024, with the second half delayed until April 2027.
