British celebrity hairstylist and beauty brand entrepreneur John Frieda has died at the age of 75, his salon announced in an Instagram post on Tuesday.
Rise to prominence
Frieda became a favorite of celebrities throughout the 1960s and 1970s, cutting hair for clients including Twiggy, Jackie Onassis and Mick Jagger. He created the iconic Purdey bowl cut for actor Joanna Lumley in 1976.
Business empire
After opening his first London salon in 1976, Frieda expanded globally with branches in Barbados, Ibiza and Los Angeles. In the 1990s he shifted focus to product development, launching the Frizz-Ease hair serum in 1988. He and partner Gail Federici sold the company to Japanese conglomerate Kao for $450 million in 2002.
Personal life
Frieda was married to Scottish singer Lulu from 1977 to 1990; they had one son. He later married Avery Agnelli, widow of Fiat heir Giovanni Agnelli, with whom he had two children and a stepdaughter.
The salon's statement described Frieda as a mentor and a true icon of the hair industry who taught his team everything and made them better.
