Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff has become the clear frontrunner for the 2028 presidential nomination after a decisive reelection victory in Georgia's midterm race, according to betting market Polymarket.
Midterm Victory Boosts Odds
Ossoff, 39, defeated Republican challenger Mike Collins with 58.9 percent of the vote and more than 2.4 million ballots cast. His odds of securing the Democratic nomination jumped to 24 percent, a nine-point increase in a single day, while his chances of winning the presidency rose to 18 percent, placing him ahead of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Vice President JD Vance.
Campaign Focused on Trump Criticism
The senator's campaign raised over $100 million and centered on sharp attacks against President Donald Trump, whom Ossoff labeled a "failed lame duck president" accused of corruption and abuse of power. The race had been a top Republican target, as Ossoff was the only Democratic senator seeking reelection in a state Trump won in 2024.
Democrats Retake Congress
Ossoff's win came amid a broader Democratic surge described as a "Blue Tsunami," with the party regaining control of both chambers of Congress two years into Trump's second term. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed became the first Muslim U.S. senator in history, further highlighting the night's historic gains.
