US President Donald Trump criticized fellow Republicans while acknowledging Democrats performed well in the midterm elections, which gave them control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Trump attacks Republican candidates
On his Truth Social platform, Trump derided Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who lost to Democrat Gina Hinojosa, claiming Abbott would not have lost had he not become a "Republican in Name Only" in recent months. Trump also distanced himself from other Republican candidates, telling CBS News that voters disliked some candidates and that some were not his friends.
Accepts results and signals cooperation
Despite his criticisms, Trump told The New York Times he was "absolutely willing to accept" the election results and said he looked forward to working with Democrats. In a Fox News interview, he expressed surprise at the outcome and predicted Democrats would send "insane" legislation that he would veto, suggesting eventual negotiation.
Trump also posted an image of a red cap bearing the word "VETO" on Truth Social, referencing his power to block legislation. He further criticized Fox News for its election coverage and for interviewing former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
