Haas Drops Esteban Ocon for Rest of F1 Season

By Fatma Younis

Haas has permanently dropped Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season following a dispute with team principal Ayao Komatsu during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend. The French driver will be replaced at this weekend's Sao Paulo Grand Prix by Brazilian rookie Rafael Camara, who has been signed for the 2027 season.

Dispute leads to immediate removal

Ocon was stood down on Saturday morning in Mexico City after a disagreement with race engineer Laura Mueller over tyre strategy during Friday's second practice session. Haas reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa took his place for the remainder of that weekend. The team stated Ocon would "no longer compete on its behalf in the 2026 world championship."

Team statement emphasizes internal matter

Komatsu said the decision was made in the team's best interest but declined to disclose details of the conversations with Ocon, calling them an internal matter. "Such decisions are never made lightly," Komatsu said in a Tuesday statement. "We feel this is firmly in the best interest of the team moving forward."

Ocon denies physical altercation allegations

Following a report in French publication L'Equipe suggesting a meeting between Komatsu and Ocon "ended abruptly, perhaps even physically," Ocon released a statement categorically rejecting any allegations of physical violence. He acknowledged "a difference in viewpoints led to a discussion with the parties involved."

Uncertain future for veteran driver

Ocon, who has contested 198 grands prix since his 2016 debut with one victory, faces an uncertain 2027 season. The only teams with potential vacancies, Racing Bulls and Cadillac, are reportedly not interested in signing him. He is seeking a reserve driver role to remain in the F1 paddock.

Haas yet to confirm full-season replacement

The team has not announced who will drive in Ocon's place for the remaining races after Sao Paulo. Camara's appearance this weekend marks his Formula 1 race debut ahead of his full-time campaign next year.
