Democrat Chris Pappas won New Hampshire’s U.S. Senate race on Tuesday, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the chamber. Pappas defeated Republican John Sununu, who was seeking a return to the Senate after two decades.

Historic milestone

At his election watch party, Pappas embraced his husband, Vann Bentley, and thanked him publicly. “I want to thank the guy next to me, my amazing husband. I’m the luckiest guy because I’m married to a man that I love,” Pappas said. “And despite all the negative attacks and the lies, it’s nice to know that love and truth prevailed tonight.”

Seat retained for Democrats

The victory keeps the seat in Democratic hands following the retirement of Senator Jeanne Shaheen after 18 years in office.
