Democrat Adam Hamilton wins Kansas Senate seat in historic upset

Democrat Adam Hamilton has defeated Republican Sen. Roger Marshall in the Kansas Senate race, NBC News projects, marking the first Democratic victory for a Senate seat in the state since 1932. The upset comes in a state that President Donald Trump carried by 16 points in the 2024 election, providing Democrats a significant boost in their fight for a Senate majority.

Historic breakthrough in conservative stronghold

Hamilton, a 62-year-old pastor who leads the largest Methodist congregation in the country, had never held public office and was registered as a Republican until earlier this year. Running as a moderate, he garnered bipartisan support, including endorsements from former Republican governors Bill Graves and Mike Hayden. Hamilton previously served on former President Barack Obama’s faith advisory council and delivered the sermon at Obama’s 2013 inaugural prayer service.

Campaign focused on economic pressures

The race turned into a key battleground in its final weeks, with Republican outside groups diverting millions of dollars to bolster Marshall amid growing backlash over Trump’s economic policies. Hamilton and his allies attacked Marshall over rising diesel fuel and beef prices that hit Kansas’ agricultural economy hard, linking them to the Iran war and Trump’s tariff agenda. They also criticized Marshall for supporting healthcare cuts in the Republican-enacted “big, beautiful bill” last year.

Marshall faced ethics scrutiny

Marshall, a 66-year-old obstetrician-gynecologist, came under fire in September after The New York Times reported he had sued hundreds of patients over unpaid medical bills, resulting in dozens of arrest warrants for missed court dates. Marshall’s lawyer said the senator set an 18% interest rate on the bills but had no involvement in the warrants. Marshall dismissed the report as a “hit job.” Democrats also highlighted Marshall’s votes against resolutions to halt the Iran conflict until Congress authorized it, and his comment that national security was “even more important than your pocketbook” amid rising gas prices.

Shifting political landscape

While Kansas has not elected a Democratic senator in nearly 90 years, Democrat Laura Kelly has served the past two terms as governor. Prior to his Senate win in 2020 by 11 points, Marshall served two terms in the House. Hamilton’s victory signals a potential shift in the state’s political dynamics ahead of future elections.
