Democrat Annie Andrews has won the South Carolina Senate race, marking the first Democratic statewide victory in the state in 28 years, according to projections from CBS News, the BBC's US partner.

Graham appointed after brother's death

Republican Darline Graham had held the seat since July, when she was appointed by the governor with President Donald Trump's blessing after the sudden death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham.

During the primary campaign, Graham acknowledged her lack of political experience, notably stating that national security was "not my thing" during a debate question about Taiwan.

Upset in deep-red state

Trump carried South Carolina by 18 points in the 2024 presidential election, making Andrews' victory a significant shift in a traditionally Republican stronghold.
