A North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) F-16 fighter jet intercepted a civilian aircraft near Mar-a-Lago on Saturday. The incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. when a civilian plane entered a restricted airspace area over the president's Palm Beach resort.
Interception Details
To secure the pilot's attention, the F-16 executed a standard 'headbutt maneuver,' which involves flying closely in front of the target aircraft. Following the maneuver, the civilian aircraft established communication and safely exited the restricted zone in compliance with flight instructions, according to a NORAD press release.
Security Protocols and Restrictions
Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) are frequently implemented by the Federal Aviation Authority to ensure safety and security during presidential visits or major events. NORAD officials noted that pilots violating these restricted areas may face enforcement action by federal authorities upon landing.
The military has previously installed missile defense systems around the Mar-a-Lago estate to provide an additional layer of protection. Data indicates that NORAD has intercepted more than 60 aircraft violating flight restrictions around the Palm Beach area since last January.
Presidential Presence in Florida
The interception took place while Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were in Florida to cast their early votes in the midterm elections. The president spent part of the day at a nearby golf club before voting in West Palm Beach in the afternoon.
