Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms made history Tuesday as the first Black woman elected governor of Georgia, defeating Republican businessman Rick Jackson and flipping a critical swing state. The former Atlanta mayor won despite being heavily outspent by Jackson, a billionaire who poured over $200 million of his personal wealth into the race. Her victory marks the first Democratic win in a Georgia gubernatorial contest since 1998.
Campaign and Context
Throughout her campaign, Bottoms downplayed the historic nature of her candidacy, focusing instead on economic disparities and positioning herself as a counterweight to President Donald Trump's administration. "What we do in this moment will echo through history," she stated before Election Day, urging voters to "choose hope over fear, progress over division." Term limits prevented Republican Gov. Brian Kemp from seeking a third term, opening the seat Bottoms will now fill.
Historical Significance
The win follows Georgia's reelection of its first Jewish senator, Democrat Jon Ossoff, alongside its first Black senator, Raphael Warnock. This election marked the third consecutive cycle with a Black woman atop the state's Democratic ticket, after two runs by voting rights advocate Stacey Abrams, who did not run this year. Bottoms was one of eight Black major-party gubernatorial candidates nationwide. Across U.S. history, only three Black governors — all Democratic men — have been elected. Bottoms and Minnesota Republican Lisa Demuth were the two Black women contesting governor races in 2026.
A descendant of enslaved Georgians, Bottoms rarely highlighted the historic implications directly but regularly referenced her heritage. "I am at least a fifth-generation Georgian," she explained, tracing her family back five generations to a plantation in Crawfordville. She reflected on how her grandfather had to "walk through these back doors" of downtown buildings that she later entered through the front as mayor, noting that her ancestry "is always present with me."
