For the first time in U.S. history, multiple elected Black governors will serve simultaneously after victories Tuesday by Republican Byron Donalds in Florida, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia, and Democrat Wes Moore winning re-election in Maryland.
Historic context
Before Tuesday, only three Black governors had been elected in U.S. history: Moore, Deval Patrick of Massachusetts in 2006, and Doug Wilder of Virginia in 1989. None served at the same time.
Other candidates
Five other Black major-party gubernatorial candidates were also on the ballot Tuesday, including David Crowley in Wisconsin, Aaron Ford in Nevada, Jermaine Johnson in South Carolina, John James in Michigan, and Lisa Demuth in Minnesota.
