Democrats secured early victories in the 2026 midterm elections, flipping a Senate seat in North Carolina and holding a key seat in Georgia, signaling a potential Democratic wave.

Georgia: Ossoff Projected Winner

Senator Jon Ossoff is projected to win re-election in Georgia, defeating Republican hopes of flipping the seat to maintain their slim Senate majority.

North Carolina: Cooper Flips Seat

Former Governor Roy Cooper is projected to defeat Michael Whatley, a Trump ally and former RNC chair, becoming the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in the state since 2008. The GOP had largely abandoned the race after retiring Senator Thom Tillis criticized the president.

Florida Democrats Break Republican Supermajority

Democrats also flipped enough seats in the Florida House to break the Republican supermajority that had enabled Governor Ron DeSantis's agenda. Representative Jared Moskowitz won re-election in a district redrawn to favor Republicans.

Outlook for Texas and South Carolina

Democrats are now targeting Senate races in Texas and South Carolina, states that have not elected a Democrat to the Senate in decades.
