Macron to Announce Measures for French Student Demands

French President Emmanuel Macron has promised that the government will introduce concrete measures to address the demands of students following weeks of nationwide unrest. The protests, characterized by class boycotts, school blockades, and demonstrations, have centered on calls for improved learning conditions and increased resources.

Government Response to Student Protests

Speaking during a visit to the southern port city of Marseille, Macron stated that he has instructed the government to tackle the root causes of the protest movement. He announced that the Prime Minister and various government ministers are scheduled to unveil several major measures on Monday afternoon.

The demonstrations have escalated significantly since mid-September, leading to mass arrests and intense scrutiny regarding the use of police riot-control weapons. On October 17, protests against rising living costs and poor school conditions turned violent, involving looting, arson, and the storming of public buildings, marking some of the most significant unrest in France in recent years.

Key Demands and Policy Changes

A major focal point of the student movement is Parcoursup, France's national online university admissions platform. Students have criticized the system for its unclear selection criteria and the unequal opportunities it presents. Reports indicate that the government is expected to announce changes to the platform to address these grievances.

Beyond admissions, students are demanding more teachers to combat staff shortages, school renovations, adjustments to teaching hours, and smaller class sizes. Earlier in October, the government pledged to deploy 3,000 additional substitute teachers to schools in need. These demands arrive as France faces significant economic challenges, including record public debt and rising poverty rates.
