Prince William warns of terrifying UK wildfire risk from climate change

By Basant El-Faramawy

Prince William says the UK faces a "terrifying prospect" of more wildfires in future due to climate change and that preparation will be "crucial." During a visit to Treherbert in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, where a huge mountain fire in August threatened homes, the Prince of Wales praised the "gargantuan" effort by firefighters, military personnel and volunteers who saved lives and property.

Visit to fire-hit community

Prince William visited Treherbert in Rhondda Cynon Taf, where a huge mountain fire in August came within metres of homes. He praised the "gargantuan" effort by firefighters, military personnel and volunteers who saved lives and property. The hillside remains blackened two months later.

Climate change driving increased risk

The Prince of Wales warned that climate change makes future wildfires a "terrifying prospect" and said preparation will be crucial. He urged the UK to take wildfires as seriously as continental Europe, noting a lack of firefighting aircraft. Figures from the National Fire Chiefs Council show a record 1,350 significant wildfires across England and Wales this year, up more than 300 from 2025 and over 1,000 from 2024.

Firefighters describe unprecedented season

Crew manager Aled Bound called it the hardest wildfire season ever, describing the work as mentally and physically draining. He said fires were deep-seated and relit despite massive water drops, warning this could be a sign of what is to come.

Community response highlighted

Local volunteers kept a community centre open 24 hours a day for six days, providing food, rest and a coordination hub. Businesses donated meals, and an ice cream van visited regularly. Prince William asked whether volunteers should be used more in future, and was told community efforts alongside military support allowed fire services to focus on containment.

Government steps to improve preparedness

The UK government announced that RAF Chinook helicopters and A400M aircraft will be equipped for firefighting. A Welsh government wildfire summit also produced promises to improve readiness. Prince William, who served as a search and rescue helicopter pilot, recalled using Sea King helicopters for water drops and said recreating that capability is now a priority.
