Two people were killed and hundreds rescued after a storm brought catastrophic flooding to parts of Florida beginning Sunday, officials said Tuesday. The victims were identified as Joshua Bennett, 34, and Archie Richards, 78, with one death occurring in a vehicle.
Casualties and rescues
Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina said emergency crews used boats and high-water vehicles to rescue hundreds from flooded areas. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported rescuing more than 60 people in Brevard County on Monday, while the Orange County Sheriff's Office High Water Rescue Team worked into the early morning hours in the Melbourne area.
Extent of flooding
Up to 2 feet of rain fell in southern Brevard County on Sunday and Monday, flooding streets, homes and businesses. One family reported 38 inches of water in their living room. Flooding also affected St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach counties. A low-pressure system over the Gulf drove continuous onshore flow across the Florida peninsula.
Government response
Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins visited Palm Bay to assess damage and meet affected families, thanking first responders and neighbors who assisted during the emergency. Schools have been closed and polling stations relocated. State officials are working with local leaders to determine total damage.
Ongoing concerns
Officials warned flooding could persist for several days after rain stops as water drains slowly. Residents were urged to avoid flooded roads, fast-moving water and downed power lines. Additional rainfall of 1 to 2 inches, with locally higher amounts, is possible along Florida's east coast Tuesday.
