England head coach Steve Borthwick has named a 36-man training squad ahead of upcoming Tests against Australia, Japan, and New Zealand, sparking debates over whether selection is based on current form or long-term experience.
Squad Composition and Experience vs Form
With the 2027 Rugby World Cup approaching, Borthwick's squad selection appears to prioritize established relationships and Test match experience. While Will Joseph earned a call-up following an impressive start to the season with Gloucester, many other selections favor veteran players who have been central to recent campaigns, despite recent fluctuations in playing minutes and form.
Former England winger Chris Ashton noted that the squad seems designed to build toward the World Cup rather than reacting solely to immediate form. This approach highlights the ongoing challenge for the England coaching staff: balancing the integration of talented players in peak form with the stability provided by seasoned internationals.
Injury Concerns and Midfield Uncertainty
The squad faces several injury setbacks that could impact upcoming selections. Benhard Janse van Rensburg is unavailable, and both Seb Atkinson and Immanuel Feyi-Waboso are currently undergoing rehabilitation. Additionally, fly-half Fin Smith is expected to miss training due to a calf injury, though the issue is not considered serious.
The midfield remains a primary area of uncertainty. While Atkinson and Henry Slade featured in the recent victory over Argentina, competition is intensifying with the inclusion of Joe Marchant and Will Joseph. Analysts suggest that the ability to provide versatility across the backline will be a deciding factor as the team prepares for the November series.
