A leading cardiologist has urged the public to undergo three simple health checks after official data showed more than 110,000 avoidable deaths in England last year.
Rising avoidable mortality
Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) recorded 110,804 avoidable deaths in England in 2025, with a further 8,011 in Wales. Diseases of the circulatory system were the second leading cause, behind cancers. Men in the most deprived areas were almost four times more likely to die from avoidable causes than those in the wealthiest areas.
Blood pressure screening
Dr Francesco Lo Monaco, a Harley Street cardiologist and founder of the National Longevity Clinic, said high blood pressure often presents no symptoms but raises the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney disease. He recommended a routine blood pressure check as one of the simplest and most important health actions.
Cholesterol and metabolic tests
A full lipid profile can detect raised LDL cholesterol, which contributes to arterial fatty deposits. Dr Lo Monaco noted that cholesterol levels cannot be judged by appearance, and family history plays a role. He also highlighted the HbA1c blood test, which measures average glucose over two to three months and can identify prediabetes and type 2 diabetes early.
Cardiovascular fitness assessment
A VO2 max assessment measures how efficiently the body uses oxygen during exercise, indicating cardiorespiratory fitness. Dr Lo Monaco said maintaining fitness and muscle strength is crucial for healthier ageing, beyond just monitoring weight.
Early prevention emphasized
Dr Lo Monaco stressed that preventative healthcare should not wait for symptoms or retirement. He said understanding health risks early provides more opportunity for constructive intervention.
