Driver jailed 10 years for fatal Lamborghini crash on M62

By Ahmed Abdelsalam

A driver who caused the death of her friend by crashing a rented Lamborghini at speeds up to 140mph on the M62 has been jailed for 10 years.

Crash details

Humaira Batool, 26, from Bradford, lost control of the £200,000 Lamborghini Urus near Ripponden, West Yorkshire, in December 2022. The vehicle flipped and burst into flames, killing passenger Mohammed Shaan Hussain, 20, also from Bradford.

Trial and sentencing

Batool was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving in September. At Leeds Crown Court, Judge Ray Singh said Hussain died as a result of Batool's "conscious decision to drive at extraordinary speed in conditions that made such driving especially dangerous." The judge rejected Batool's claims that Hussain had interfered with the controls.

Victim impact

In a victim statement, Hussain's mother Nasreen Akhtar described him as a "beloved son and cherished brother." His brother Mohammed Souhail Hussain said: "Shaan was our older brother then. He is our older brother today and he will always be our older brother."

Additional penalties

Batool was disqualified from driving for 10 years and must pass an extended driving test. She had failed to appear for an earlier sentencing hearing, claiming a medical emergency, which the judge called a "ruse" and issued a bench warrant for her arrest.
