UK meat suppliers experienced fridge temperature spikes overnight after cyber attacks targeted software used by supermarkets and food suppliers across Europe.
Limited impact on meat supplies
The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS) said a few of its roughly 300 members were affected, with fridge systems beginning to defrost on Monday night and one unit reaching 100°C. Because abattoir units were empty at the time, no meat produce was lost.
Industry urged to stay vigilant
An AIMS spokesman said the incident should remind the entire food supply chain that businesses can be targets, urging members and the wider industry to remain vigilant.
NCSC says national impact minimal
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) confirmed it is working with affected firms and described the national impact as minimal. Director of operations Paul Chichester said the centre is monitoring the situation and working to close vulnerabilities before they are exploited.
Retailers advised to review defences
No major supermarket chain has been directly impacted, but retailers are being urged to monitor systems closely, keep software updated, and maintain contingency plans for relocating food produce if needed.
Sector takes cyber security seriously
The British Retail Consortium said retailers invest heavily in cybersecurity and are working with the NCSC to secure fridges and freezers. The British Frozen Food Federation added that members are assessing the vulnerability of their freezer systems.
NCSC head details overnight response
NCSC chief executive Dr Richard Horne said teams worked through the night contacting UK organisations with vulnerable technology exposed to the internet. He revealed the attack on French supermarket fridges involved legacy systems connected with default passwords.
Attribution premature, preparedness essential
Dr Horne said it is too early to identify the attackers but stressed that the incident reinforces the need for organisations to make wise security choices, noting previous criminal attacks on UK retailers.
Annual report highlights scale of threat
The NCSC annual report showed its incident management team received 1,831 cyber attack reports this year, with 337 requiring support and 80 deemed nationally significant. The centre also warned 8,500 organisations of compromised systems.
