Israel Elections and US Midterm Ballot Measures

By Fatma Younis

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a critical electoral test as the nation prepares for its first nationwide elections since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks. Netanyahu is locked in a tight race with Gadi Eisenkot, a former Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff and leader of the centrist Yashar party. The campaign has centered on key issues including the economy and military conscription.

Political Challenges for Netanyahu

Netanyahu, who has led Israel for nearly 19 of the last 30 years, faces significant scrutiny over intelligence failures and the security response following the October 7 attacks. Additionally, the Prime Minister is navigating ongoing domestic criminal cases. Because no single party is expected to secure a majority in the 120-seat Knesset, the formation of a governing coalition will depend on intensive political negotiations.

Key US Midterm Ballot Measures

In the United States, voters in more than three dozen states will decide on approximately 150 ballot measures during the upcoming midterm elections. These measures are expected to significantly impact local policies. Key areas of focus include abortion rights, with states like Idaho, Nevada, and Virginia seeking to protect these rights in their constitutions, while Missouri faces an initiative aimed at removing such protections.

Financial and administrative issues also feature prominently on the ballots. In California, proposals regarding billionaire wealth taxes are under scrutiny, while Washington state is considering a measure to repeal a tax on annual income exceeding $1 million. Additionally, voters in Missouri and Maryland will decide on redistricting measures that could influence congressional maps and mid-decade changes.
