Fin Smith faces injury doubt ahead of England autumn tests

England rugby faces a potential setback ahead of the upcoming Nations Championship Tests as fly-half Fin Smith undergoes assessment for a calf injury. Although Smith was included in the 36-man training squad announced by head coach Steve Borthwick on Sunday, he will not participate in training this week and has instead begun rehabilitation within the camp.

Injury updates and squad changes

The injury occurred following Smith's appearance in Northampton's recent defeat to Leicester. Head coach Steve Borthwick is expected to provide further clarity on the severity of the injury on Tuesday. In response to the situation, Gloucester's Charlie Atkinson has been called up as cover for the squad.

Smith, who has started England's last five Tests after overtaking George Ford during the Six Nations, was widely expected to lead the team in the November opener against Australia. His potential absence would impact a demanding international schedule that includes fixtures against Japan and New Zealand, as well as the inaugural Nations Championship finals weekend at Twickenham's Allianz Stadium.

Squad availability and depth

England's injury concerns extend beyond the fly-half position. The squad is also managing the absence of centre Seb Atkinson, who is rehabbing a knee injury, and winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, who is recovering from a hamstring issue. Additionally, Benhard Janse van Rensburg was omitted from the squad following a head injury sustained earlier this month while playing for Bristol.

Despite these setbacks, England maintains depth in the fly-half role. Marcus Smith remains in strong form for Harlequins, while veteran George Ford continues to offer significant experience and leadership to the group.
