William Saliba Back in Training, Arteta Selection Headache

By Karim Hammam

Arsenal defender William Saliba has returned to first-team training after missing the entire season so far due to a back injury sustained during France's World Cup semi-final loss to Spain. The 25-year-old, a key figure in last season's Premier League title win, had been undergoing individual rehabilitation but is now back with the squad ahead of their Champions League clash with Slavia Prague and a busy festive schedule.

Konsa's Impressive Form

In Saliba's absence, summer signing Ezri Konsa has formed a formidable partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes. The £55 million arrival from Aston Villa has started seven of Arsenal's nine Premier League matches, helping the team concede just five goals and sit atop the table. Manager Mikel Arteta described Konsa's adaptation as "unbelievable," noting his physicality and aggression have impressed supporters.

Potential Solutions

Arteta now faces a selection dilemma with multiple high-quality options. Ben White and Jurrien Timber have been first-choice right-backs, while Konsa has also played there for England. Moving Konsa to right-back could allow Saliba to resume his central partnership with Gabriel, adding physical presence on the flank. However, this would reduce playing time for young centre-back Cristhian Mosquera, who has recovered from a hamstring injury but seen limited minutes.

Squad Depth and Rotation

Arsenal played 63 games across all competitions last season, winning the league and reaching the Champions League final. With Arteta aiming to defend the title and achieve European success, the manager will need to rotate his defensive resources. The Gunners host Hull City on Saturday before the international break, providing further time for Saliba to build match fitness before becoming a regular option.
