Kellogg’s has removed rice from its Rice Krispies and Coco Pops cereals after “changing weather conditions” affected the quality and availability of the ingredient, the company announced on Tuesday.
Recipe Changes and Allergen Impact
Rice Krispies has been reformulated to use rice flour instead of rice, while Coco Pops now contain a blend of rice flour and corn flour. The new recipes also include wheat gluten, meaning the cereals are no longer suitable for people with a wheat allergy or coeliac disease. Previously, both products carried a “may contain gluten” label because they were made in a facility that handled gluten-containing cereals; now wheat must be declared as an allergen on packaging and highlighted in bold in the ingredients list. Prominent labelling on the packs alerts consumers to the change.
Company Statement
A Kellogg’s spokeswoman said the update helps maintain consistent quality at a time when changing weather conditions are affecting the quality and availability of some rice and grains. She added that the revised recipes have been carefully assessed for taste, appearance and texture, and that the company is continuing to listen to consumer feedback. Kellogg’s said both cereals remain “non-HFSS” – not high in fat, salt or sugar – contain no artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners, and maintain the same levels of fibre, vitamin D and iron.
Sales Context
The Grocer trade magazine reported that the reformulation comes as sales of Rice Krispies are in decline, with both value and volume down, according to its Top Products Survey 2026 due next month.
