Chipotle's overhauled loyalty program has driven membership to 24 million by September, accounting for one-third of all sales and marking the largest loyalty base in the company's history.
Program Changes Drive Growth
The fast-casual Mexican chain revamped its app in April, extending the lifespan of rewards points, adding monthly free food promotions, and lowering the points required to redeem items such as tortillas, soda and chips. Chief Executive Scott Boatwright said during an earnings call last week that the changes are designed to deepen engagement and give guests more reasons to visit.
Since the April relaunch, loyalty membership has grown from 21 million to 24 million customers.

Other major restaurant brands have also updated their loyalty platforms this year. McDonald’s announced in September a refreshed MyMcDonald’s Rewards program offering early access to limited-time menu items, exclusive store-opening invites, and tiered rewards based on visit frequency. Domino’s debuted an overhauled website and app in August, providing a $5-off coupon for orders placed through the new platforms.
Industry Analysis Highlights Importance
Consultants Deloitte noted earlier this year that loyalty programs play a critical role in capturing new customers and retaining existing ones, a benefit that is even more crucial as consumers increasingly eat at home. The analysis found that 67% of program participants belong to two or more loyalty programs, indicating enthusiasm but not exclusive commitment to any single brand.
