Rivals Season 2: Alex Hassell on Character's Emotional Shift

By Karim Hammam

Disney+ is set to release the second half of "Rivals" season two on November 11, continuing the story shortly after the shocking death of Monica, played by Claire Rushbrook. Actor Alex Hassell, who portrays the lothario Rupert Campbell-Black, has revealed that a flashback scene showing Rupert comforting Monica as she dies will fundamentally change his character.

Character Development After Monica's Death

Hassell told Radio Times that Monica's dying words throw Rupert into "a much more reflective place." While he still struggles with strong emotions, the character becomes more sensitive and vulnerable, with his drive to win taking on a different meaning.

Hassell on Nude Scenes and Fitness

The actor also discussed the difficulty of his numerous nude scenes, admitting he used to hate looking at photos of himself. He emphasized that his physique resulted from working with a personal trainer without extreme diets, noting that such bodies require significant effort and are not an expected standard.

Jilly Cooper's Involvement Before Her Death

Author Jilly Cooper, whose Rutshire Chronicles novels inspire the series, visited the set during season two filming just a week before her death at age 88 last year. Hassell said Cooper approved scripts and occasionally requested changes to ensure characters remained true to her vision.

Release Date

The second part of "Rivals" season two premieres on Disney+ on November 11.
