New York City police are investigating the stabbing of a 28-year-old woman who was attacked while jogging along the Belt Parkway waterfront in Brooklyn on Friday evening. Katie Suarez remains on life support following what authorities describe as a random and very violent assault.
Attack Details
Suarez called her father around 8 p.m. Friday to say she was about a half-mile from home. When she did not return, her parents went searching and her father found her with a stab wound to the neck, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny. Kenny described a brutal scene with a blood trail extending approximately 150 feet along the Shore Parkway Greenway near the Bath Beach and Bensonhurst neighborhoods.
Investigation Underway
Police said nothing appeared to have been taken from Suarez and there was no indication of sexual trauma. "We believe it to be some sort of random attack at this time," Kenny said. The area lacks surveillance cameras, and a neighborhood canvass has yielded no video footage. A license plate reader captured about 1,700 vehicles passing the area during the attack window, and detectives are working to identify drivers with dash cameras that may have recorded relevant footage.
Public Appeal
The NYPD released a photo of Suarez, who has participated in city races including the Frozen Bonsai 5K in March, and is asking anyone who saw her between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m. Friday on the eastbound bike path between Bay 8 Street and Bay 17 Street to come forward. Police are also interviewing fishermen who frequent the area. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
