Queensland Mater Hospitals Close Pathology Labs Over Formaldehyde Concerns

By Fatma Younis

Pathology services at Mater's Brisbane and Springfield hospitals will permanently close following an investigation into potential formaldehyde exposure and ongoing financial pressures, affecting about 400 staff.

Safety investigation prompts closure

The anatomical pathology laboratory at Mater Brisbane was shut on 24 September after an employee's personal exposure monitor recorded formaldehyde levels above workplace standards. Formalin, a solution of formaldehyde and water, is a hazardous chemical linked to respiratory irritation, allergies, and increased cancer risk. Staff had been wearing protective respiratory equipment and monitoring devices as a precaution.

Outsourcing to external providers

On 2 November, Mater announced all pathology services at both hospitals will be outsourced to specialist providers, including Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology and Pathology Queensland. A Mater spokesperson said significant long-term infrastructure investment would be needed to reopen the lab, and the current operating model is not sustainable given changes in the pathology sector.

Staff and union concerns

United Workers Union Queensland secretary Fiona Scalon warned the change could mean workers losing a substantial part of their income and conditions, despite performing the same work. She noted different employers operate under different enterprise agreements, making redeployment uncertain.

Health department response

Queensland Health said Mater Health is responsible for decisions on its pathology services. Pathology Queensland has taken on a small increase in perinatal autopsies within existing capacity, and the department will continue working with Mater to ensure patient access to pathology services.
