Unai Emery will mark his 55th birthday and fourth anniversary at Aston Villa by leading the team against Barcelona at the Nou Camp in the Champions League on Tuesday night. The Spaniard arrived at Villa Park in November 2022 with two stated ambitions: to win a trophy and to play in Europe. Both have been achieved, with Villa lifting the Europa League in May to end a 30-year wait for silverware.
Transformation under Emery
Emery has turned Villa from Premier League strugglers into Europa League winners and Champions League contenders. He signed a contract extension in May 2024 that runs to 2029, and the club threatened legal action after pundit Jamie Carragher suggested Emery would leave for an elite club such as Manchester United. Villa view themselves as ready to join that elite tier after challenging domestically and in Europe for two years.
Summer changes and new vigour
The squad saw significant turnover in the summer, with Emiliano Martinez, Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Ollie Watkins departing for traditionally bigger clubs or Saudi Arabia. Emery has been given carte blanche to reshape the team, and the signing of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg signalled continued ambition. The manager said the changes have given him new vigour ahead of the Barcelona test.
Barcelona as benchmark
Emery described the match as a chance to measure Villa's progress against a club that has won successive La Liga titles under Hansi Flick. "We are constantly seeking new challenges and we want to respond in games against Barcelona to see how far we are from them," he said. Barcelona hold six points in the league phase; Villa have nine. Emery stressed the need to avoid surprises to finish in the top eight and said the season's second half will be decisive.
Flick and Barcelona wary of Emery
Flick called Emery "one of the best coaches in Europe and the world," praising his team's structure, offensive patterns and confidence on the ball. Barcelona sources reportedly fear Villa's ability to exploit defensive weaknesses, citing Alejandro Balde's struggles and Joao Cancelo's lack of defensive instinct. Emery's meticulous planning and capacity to pounce on opponents' flaws are widely respected.
Poor Nou Camp record
Emery has lost 14 of his 15 games at the Nou Camp and beaten Barcelona only three times in 30 attempts. His last Champions League appearance there ended in Paris Saint-Germain's 6-1 collapse in 2017 after a 4-0 first-leg lead. No English team has won at the stadium since Liverpool in 2007. Emery said the experience taught him the necessity of VAR and provided valuable lessons he now shares with his players.
