Liam Dawson downplays comparisons to Adil Rashid

By Fatma Younis

England spinner Liam Dawson has dismissed any comparisons between himself and veteran teammate Adil Rashid, despite stepping into the frontline spin role during recent matches in Pakistan.

Differences in bowling roles

Dawson, who has featured in England's last two matches, emphasized that he and Rashid occupy different roles within the team. While Dawson has been utilized for his skiddy slow left-arm bowling in the conditions of Rawalpindi and Lahore, Rashid has been overlooked for the recent tri-series despite being fit. Rashid, a mainstay in white-ball cricket for over a decade, currently requires 26 more dismissals to become England’s all-time leading wicket-taker in one-day internationals.

Recent team setbacks

The absence of an experienced spin attack has been noted following England's recent defeats to Sri Lanka and Pakistan. In Lahore, England was unable to defend a target against Pakistan, as an unbroken 89-run partnership between Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf secured a victory for the hosts. Despite these losses, the 36-year-old Dawson remains optimistic, viewing the recent struggles as valuable learning experiences ahead of the World Cup in South Africa next year.

Career resurgence and retirement from Tests

After spending much of his career as a fringe player, Dawson has recently established himself as a key figure in England's T20 and ODI setups. Reflecting on his renewed involvement, Dawson noted that he previously believed his international career was over. However, he confirmed that his retirement from first-class cricket remains final, stating that his days of playing Test cricket are behind him.
