A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and released on bail after a video appeared to show a Coventry City supporter mocking Sunderland fans with an image of Bradley Lowery during Saturday’s Premier League match at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Incident details
The footage, widely shared on social media, showed a young fan in the home end holding up a phone displaying a picture of Lowery, who died of neuroblastoma in 2017 at age six, while gesturing toward the away section during Coventry’s 3-1 victory.
Police and club responses
West Midlands Police confirmed the boy handed himself in on Sunday and was bailed with conditions. The force said it understood the community outrage and was working with both clubs. Coventry City said it does not tolerate offensive behaviour and would liaise with authorities.
Family statement
Bradley’s mother, Gemma Lowery, said through the Bradley Lowery Foundation that her son “deserves to be remembered with love, not hate.” She called the act cruel and urged the club to take appropriate action, while asking that hatred not be directed at the boy.
