Naples Airport Closes for €30m Runway Renovation in November

By Sohaib Shams

Italy’s Naples airport closed on November 1 for a €30 million runway renovation project that will keep the hub shut until November 30. The closure, described by airport operator GESAC as “radical and scheduled runway renovation work,” aims to meet rigorous safety standards and will involve about 500 workers resurfacing the runway and redeveloping connecting roads.

Flights Diverted to Salerno

During the closure, selected flights will operate from Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport, about an hour’s drive south of Naples. Domestic services include a Ryanair flight to Bergamo and an easyJet route to Milan Malpensa. International destinations such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Casablanca, Dubai, Madrid, and Sharm el-Sheikh will also be served from Salerno, with both terminals open to handle the additional traffic.

Transport Alternatives Arranged

Special bus services will run between Naples Piazza Garibaldi and Salerno Airport in both directions, with increased frequency between Salerno Airport and Salerno railway station. Shared taxi services will offer fixed fares between Salerno Airport and major railway stations in Naples and Salerno.

Chios Island Airport Also Closes

Elsewhere in Europe, Chios Island National Airport in Greece will close from November 15, 2026, to March 15, 2027, for runway extension and upgrades. The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority said the work will ensure smooth air connectivity for the 2027 tourist season and mitigate winter weather impacts.
