Sri Lanka Rescues 40 Iranian Sailors

By Sohaib Shams

Sri Lanka has coordinated the rescue of 40 Iranian sailors from 19 commercial ships located in international waters off its coast. The operation was initiated following a request from the Iranian embassy through diplomatic channels.

Medical Assistance and Repatriation

The rescued sailors were brought ashore at Galle Harbour on the southern coast to receive medical treatment for unspecified medical emergencies. Following their recovery, they were returned to Iran early Sunday morning. Foreign Ministry spokesman Thushara Rodrigo stated that the response was based on humanitarian grounds and international law regarding distress calls.

Context of the Rescue

Local media reported that the sailors were aboard oil tankers subject to US sanctions. The rescue operation involved several agencies, including the Sri Lankan navy, coastguard, and local shipping companies. This marks the second time this year that Sri Lanka has rescued Iranian sailors; in March, the country assisted crew members after the Iranian warship IRIS Dena was sunk by a US submarine torpedo.

Geopolitical Tensions

The rescue occurs amidst ongoing maritime tensions and a blockade on Iranian shipping. While Iran has expressed readiness to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the blockade on its ports ends, tensions remain high regarding the enforcement of these maritime restrictions.
