Maya Jama has spoken publicly about James Acaster's surprise confession and subsequent exit from the BBC game show Celebrity Traitors. The host discussed her reaction to the moment Acaster outed himself as a Traitor during the penultimate round table, an unprecedented move that left viewers and fellow contestants stunned.
Acaster's confession and the finale outcome
Acaster was banished after admitting his Traitor status, having previously expressed discomfort with the role and a desire to play as a Faithful. The series concluded with Faithfuls Romesh Ranganathan and Sebastian Croft triumphing over the remaining Traitors, sharing a £83,000 prize for their chosen charities.
Jama describes emotional toll on contestants
In an interview with Variety, Jama said she had no prior knowledge that Acaster did not want to be a Traitor. "Never in a game would you expect that you're going to be put in a situation where you absolutely hate being a Traitor," she said. "It was hard. I don't think anybody knows how it would feel once you're in the situation, and that's going to impact everyone completely differently. As he said, for him it was a lot."
Game's immersive nature creates real pressure
Jama described the experience as a "mind trip" that becomes unexpectedly heavy. "You're like, 'OK, this is a game, we're playing for charity.' But then these people have real feelings, and trying to find the balance between it is tougher than it looks," she explained. She added that the castle environment creates a bubble where emotions intensify and escape is impossible.
Co-stars and commentators defend Acaster
Ranganathan praised Acaster's unique approach, noting he accepted the role but played it as a Faithful, helping others whenever possible. Amol Rajan, who was "murdered" early after Jama and Grant recruited Acaster over him, called Acaster a "remarkable soul." On The Rest is Entertainment podcast, Richard Osman defended Acaster from criticism, arguing he chose the optimal moment to exit without destroying the show's endgame.
Production pause and welfare concerns
Filming of the penultimate episode was reportedly paused so producers could intervene when Acaster became distressed at the round table. The BBC stated that the "highest priority is always the safety and welfare of everyone taking part," with players closely monitored by a dedicated welfare team.
Absence from reunion show sparks fan concern
Acaster did not appear on the spin-off show The Traitors Uncloaked, and his absence from the conversation drew concern from viewers and TV host Dan Walker. Several other stars, including Bella Ramsay, Michael Sheen, Joanna McNally, Rob Beckett, Sharon Rooney, Myha'la, Jerry Hall, and Jama herself, also skipped the reunion.
Series draws record ratings for BBC
Despite the controversy, Celebrity Traitors has been a ratings success. The series peaked at 15 million viewers, with Thursday's semi-final attracting 10.7 million live viewers and a 62 percent audience share.
