Actor Noah Wyle, recently named People's Sexiest Man Alive, has shared a childhood story about being rejected by Eddie Murphy when he asked for an autograph at age nine. Wyle, 55, recounted the encounter during an appearance on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, explaining how the experience shaped his own approach to fan interactions.
Childhood Encounter with Comedy Star
Wyle said he met Murphy, already a comedy superstar, and told him he liked his work on Saturday Night Live. Murphy responded by asking what he was doing up so late, then refused the autograph request with a blunt expletive. The Independent has contacted Murphy's representatives for comment.
Experience Shapes Fan Interactions
The former ER star said the rejection inspired him to always make time for young fans. "I always sign an autograph. Whenever a nine-year-old needs an autograph from me, I sign that so fast," Wyle stated.
Daughter's Humorous Birthday Gift
Wyle revealed his 10-year-old daughter created a framed gift referencing the incident. She printed a picture of Murphy with a misspelled note reading, "Dear Noah, you're a great kid, Eddie Murphy," and presented it as the autograph he never received. Wyle keeps the gift in his office.
Family Reaction to Sexiest Man Alive Title
Earlier this week, Wyle discussed his children's reactions to the People honor. His son warned the title would make life harder but supported him, while his older daughter teased him. Former ER co-star George Clooney, a two-time Sexiest Man Alive recipient, was mentioned; Wyle expects Clooney to be amused and proud.
