The Detroit Lions handed the Minnesota Vikings their first loss of the 2026 season with a 19-15 victory on Sunday, leaving the NFL without an undefeated team after eight weeks. The Vikings fell to 6-1, and their 11-game regular-season winning streak dating to last season — the league's longest active streak — was snapped.
The Vikings trailed 12-7 entering the fourth quarter after a 30-yard run by Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who leads the NFL in touchdowns. Minnesota took a 15-12 lead with 3:56 remaining when tight end T.J. Hockensen caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kyler Murray and the two-point conversion succeeded.
Detroit answered with a go-ahead touchdown four minutes later, capped by a 7-yard catch by wide receiver Jameson Williams. The Vikings' final possession lasted three plays and five yards before a punt, sealing the loss.
Offensive Struggles Persist for Minnesota
Despite their 6-0 start, the Vikings entered the game ranked in the bottom third of the league in scoring average and fourth-fewest in yards per game at 281. Coach Kevin O'Connell acknowledged the inconsistency, saying the team is searching for consistent execution.
Heavy Blitzing Fails to Contain Gibbs
Minnesota's defense blitzed on 89.7% of Jared Goff's dropbacks, the highest rate tracked by Next Gen Stats this season. Goff threw an interception but also completed a touchdown and 130 yards against the pressure. Gibbs exploited the aggressive scheme, forcing 12 missed tackles en route to 153 rushing yards.
Injury Halts Play
The game was paused for about five minutes in the second half when Lions linebacker Jack Campbell was injured making a tackle. He was carted off and taken to a hospital for evaluation of a neck injury. Lions coach Dan Campbell said Campbell was being cared for and the team was thinking about him.
