Kimi Antonelli clinched the Formula One world championship on Sunday with a third-place finish at the Mexican Grand Prix, becoming the sport's youngest champion at 20 years and 68 days.
Record-breaking achievement
The Italian surpassed Sebastian Vettel's previous record by three years and 65 days, and is the first Italian champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. He secured the title with four rounds remaining.
Mexican Grand Prix drama
The race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez featured multiple incidents. Lewis Hamilton started from pole but clashed with Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc on the opening lap, while George Russell received a 10-second penalty for colliding with Isack Hadjar. Max Verstappen won the race, moving to second in the standings, 119 points behind Antonelli.
Antonelli's path to the title
After a difficult rookie season that raised doubts about his future, Antonelli rebounded with a winning streak of five races, beginning with his maiden victory in China. Mercedes provided the dominant car, but teammate Russell had been the pre-season favorite. Antonelli's dominant win in Austin the previous weekend underscored his championship credentials.
Celebration and family
Antonelli arrived at the circuit with his sister Maggie and parents Veronica and Marco. After a hug from race engineer Pete 'Bono' Bonnington and a kiss from his mother, he drove from fourth on the grid to a historic podium finish. The Foro Sol stadium erupted as he crossed the line on the final lap.
