President Donald Trump said Sunday he plans to deliver a closing midterm election message at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, spotlighting a restoration project that has been delayed, over budget, and plagued by structural issues.
Shift in Campaign Strategy
Trump's potential appearance at the Reflecting Pool would mark a departure from his month-long strategy of holding more than 25 rallies in primarily conservative areas. The move comes as Republicans seek to overcome low approval ratings and polling that suggests the Iran war, elevated energy costs, and rising living expenses could benefit Democrats in the midterms.
Reflecting Pool Renovation Troubles
The Reflecting Pool repair began in April after Trump expressed a desire to change the pool's color, initially estimating a $1.5 million cost and completion before Independence Day. The project finished nearly three months late, with costs exceeding ten times the original estimate. After a June reopening, algae blooms appeared and the "American-flag blue" liner began peeling, forcing another drainage in mid-July for further repairs.
Dispute Over Causes
Trump has repeatedly blamed vandals for the setbacks and said security cameras have been installed. However, the office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, led by Jeanine Pirro, attributed the problems to shoddy workmanship. The Justice Department charged former Olympian David Hearn with intentional damage but dropped the case this summer after determining he was not responsible; a judge later permanently dismissed the charges.
Trump Criticizes Pirro
Following the dropped case, Trump said he was "disappointed with Jeanine Pirro, really disappointed. She folded like an umbrella," though he stopped short of removing her from office.
