Trump Snaps at Reporter Over Iran Question at Mar-a-Lago Halloween Party

By Fatma Younis

President Donald Trump had a tense exchange with a reporter during a Halloween party at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach on Saturday night. Surrounded by costumed guests and flanked by Secret Service agents, Trump was asked whether he expected to launch a new offensive against Iran after the midterm elections on Tuesday.

Combative response

“Why would you ask such a stupid question?” Trump snapped, identifying the reporter as from The New York Times. “Let’s say I did, would I tell you? Let's say I didn't, would I tell you?” he said, throwing his hands up. “I can’t tell you that…It’s not a question for The New York Times.”

Speculation on Iran offensive

Speculation has mounted for weeks that Trump, 80, may order renewed strikes on Iranian infrastructure and nuclear sites following the midterm elections, which will determine control of the House and Senate. U.S. officials have reportedly warned Gulf allies to prepare for a short, intense military campaign after Election Day. The president also met with top military leaders on Thursday, including Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command.

Previous clashes with press

Trump has a long history of combative relations with the press, including personal attacks on reporters and lawsuits against media outlets. Last month, he berated The Independent’s Andrew Feinberg in the Oval Office, calling him a “sick person” who “better be careful.”

War context and political stakes

Eight months into the conflict, large-scale attacks have largely paused, but no clear end is in sight. The war has resulted in at least 18 U.S. service member deaths, hundreds wounded, and a reported cost of at least $47 billion, while driving up fuel prices. Polls show the war is broadly unpopular, and Republicans could face severe losses in the midterms amid voter frustration over the war and cost of living.
