Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., was hospitalized Saturday after suffering a stroke, his office announced Sunday. The 53-year-old senator experienced numbness in his arm while attending his son's hockey game and was taken to a local hospital, where the stroke was diagnosed.

Murphy was transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment, according to his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt. He is awake and alert, and doctors are optimistic about a full recovery. Murphy, who is not up for re-election this year, had been scheduled to campaign in New Hampshire on Sunday. He has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump and recently spoke at a Middle East Institute event criticizing potential U.S. military action against Iran. Earlier this fall, his office was among those that received letters containing suspicious substances.
