Sen. Tim Scott Dodges on Accepting Alaska Election Results

By Fatma Younis

Sen. Tim Scott, the South Carolina Republican who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, declined on Sunday to say whether he would accept the results of the Alaska Senate race if Democrat Mary Peltola is certified the winner.

Scott’s Interview on ‘Meet the Press’

During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” moderator Kristen Welker asked Scott twice whether he would accept the election outcome if Peltola prevails. Both times Scott avoided a direct answer, insisting that incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan “is going to win” and that confusing voters with a same‑name candidate is a federal offense.

New York Times Report and Denials

The exchange followed a New York Times report alleging that Democrats, including members of Peltola’s campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, sought to recruit a candidate named Dan J. Sullivan to appear on the ballot. The DSCC said it “is not involved with Dan J. Sullivan,” and Peltola stated she “knew nothing about any other candidates on the ballot except for me and the incumbent.”

Legal and Political Fallout

The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit seeking to block certification of the Senate election if Sullivan loses, citing potential voter confusion. President Donald Trump called for both Peltola and the challenger Sullivan to be removed from the ballot and prosecuted. Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy, a Republican, ordered a state investigation into whether the alleged scheme violated state law.
